M1

Blackburn Footbridge

1. This is the line of sight of Old Droppingwell Road, which the M1 had mercilessly cut in two.

2. In order to retain the previous right of way that was Old Droppingwell Road, a footbridge was constructed across the M1. This meets up with Whitley View Road across the way.

3. This photo shows how much the land is banked up on the far side of the motorway, and how high the spiral ramp has to climb to meet street level on that side. The bridge supports splay into two legs on the near side.

4. Halfway up the ramp and looking across. You can make out how the bridge was put together in sections; note also a supporting pillar has come into view. Look at the fantastic pattern detail on the far retaining wall: very late-1960s!

5. A view of the M1 northbound from the middle of the thin bridge...

6. ...and the view southbound. The sliproads to and from Meadowhall are clearly visible, as are the Blackburn gasometers at right, and, at distant left, Bill & Ben.

7. A final look back down the bridge we've walked up. The spiral ramp can now be seen.
